Nick Barber, Co-Owner, Sigma Relocation, LLC, Dallas, TX
Case Study: Sigma Relocation, LLC, Dallas, TX
The Problem:
Nick Barber needed a solution to the company’s increasing noise problem in their recently expanded call center. The company is a rapidly growing, innovative, full-scale apartment locating company based in Dallas, Texas. Naturally sociable employees were fighting distractions and noise.
The Solution
Nick was faced with renting unused space or finding another solution. He and his IT department discovered the answer to their problems in white noise technology and sound masking. They made a nationwide online search and gathered bids.
As a result, Nick found that, in addition to being an established and reputable local company, Speech Privacy Systems also had the latest technology in sound masking, which is able to maintain the right frequencies and balance of frequencies across the space better than older, plenum-based systems. Nick said, “If you’re running the older technology, to get the same level of privacy, we’d have to probably be running at a noticeably higher volume.” With this system, “Unless you know it is on, you don’t know what it is and just assume the air conditioner is on.”
The Result
- Happier, less distracted employees
- Noticeable improvement in the work environment in terms of noise levels;
- Increased productivity
- Decreased ability to hear conversations more than 10-15 feet away; less socializing and other distractions; increased ability to focus on work.
- Cost savings; more efficient utilization of space.
- Nick can fill every desk as his company continues to expand by 2-3 employees per month.

“…the Voice Arrest is the bomb. It makes a dramatic difference in our privacy for patient rooms.”
Dr. Dudley Bell

Case Study: Amerisource-Bergen, Frisco, TX
The Problem
“Our job is to make customers and prospects feel like they are uniquely special, but that’s hard to do when we can’t hear what they are saying on the phone over the other conversations in the room. We wanted to improve the working environment for the staff and the callers in a way that would positively impact our bottom line.”
“Our professional staff provides exceptional personally-specific guidance for callers seeking assistance in making pharmaceutical decisions. We want to be certain the conversation is not only accurate and compassionate, but also that privacy is maintained for every call. We want our nursing staff to be able to share happiness and a laugh with one caller, while not intruding where another caller is searching for more critical information.”
AmerisourceBergen is one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical services companies. ASD Healthcare, is a Frisco, TX – based division of AmerisourceBergen’s Specialty Group (ABSG) which focuses on injectibles for healthcare providers around the world. Speech Privacy Systems has successfully installed systems for ASD Healthcare since 2004, when Michael Gilgore, director of ASD Healthcare, called with a need to increase productivity in an existing facility with partitioned work spaces.
AmerisourceBergen Specialty Group is known for strong manufacturer and physician relationships in improving cost and effectiveness of providing prescription medications. The professional and confidential work environment plays a big part in serving and maintaining those relationships.
The Solution
Michael Gilgore had done research on solutions, was aware that sound masking was the most effective way to reduce distractions and increase privacy while staying within his budget, and found that, in addition to being an established and reputable local company, Speech Privacy Systems also had the latest technology in sound masking, which is measurably the most effective system available.
In the 2004 project, ASD Healthcare found that the equipment installed by Speech Privacy Systems maintained the right frequencies and balance of frequencies across the space better than older, plenum-based systems. Michael’s research showed that direct field sound masking takes advantage of new technology to eliminate virtually all the challenges faced by the older indirect field plenum-based technology. As a result of prior Speech Privacy Systems sound masking installations proving simple and effective while minimizing costs for ASD Healthcare, the Specialty Group has relied on Speech Privacy Systems for each new workspace as their new building expansion in Frisco, Texas, rolled out since 2007.
Through research and experience, ABSG found that Installing sound masking was the most effective and economic solution for complying with the HIPAA requirement for medical professionals to safeguard medical records by all reasonable means. ABSG found that the VoiceArrest system installed by Speech Privacy Systems was the most effective way to reduce distractions and increase privacy, and most cost efficient, since it involved the newer direct field ceiling mounted technology.
The Result
- Simple sound masking technology which is consistently and uniformly effective, and has little noticeable presence.
- Happier, less stressed, more focused and engaged employees
- Increased productivity in terms of number of calls and sales.

Case Study: USGIF Innovates to Provide Confidential Privacy in Exhibit Hall Setting
Situation
- 28 Portable room partitions in 276,000 sq.ft. conference hall with up to 47-foot high ceilings
- Confidential intelligence industry meetings requiring highest levels of acoustic privacy
Geospatial intelligence is comprised of multiple mathematical, scientific, acquisition, and intelligence disciplines which have been converging for several years now as the functional center of U.S. national and homeland security. The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) was formed to enable its members to work together with a mutual goal of improving U.S. homeland security. USGIF hosted its 2010 GEOINT Symposium at the Ernest M. Morial Convention Center located in New Orleans, LA. The GEOINT Symposium is the premiere annual event supporting the defense, intelligence and homeland security communities.
Jeff Ley, USGIF Director of Business Development, Membership and Exhibitions, described the challenges he faced to provide private meeting rooms in the cavernous conference hall. “When it became clear that private meeting rooms would not be available, [USGIF] decided to build our own temporary ‘rooms.’ The trick was that the organizations using these spaces needed truly confidential privacy. We had to get creative to ensure that conversations taking place in these meeting spaces would not be overheard.”
Ley’s team constructed 28 open-topped rooms in a portion of the the 276,000 square foot convention hall, which also housed the trade show. However, because many of the meetings would take place when the trade show was not in session, there would be little of the usual trade show ambient noise to help cover the speech. So Ley and his team added low-level background noise called “sound masking.” Historically, sound masking systems have been developed as complex systems of speakers above 8 or 10 foot tiled ceilings. Such systems weren’t flexible enough to meet USGIF’s needs. Lay needed a system with the flexibility to meet these convention hall constraints, and a vendor with a proven track record with intelligence organizations.
The Solution
In spite of ceiling heights ranging from 25 feet to 47 feet in a 276,000 square foot hall, with little ambient noise to cover private discussions, confidentiality was maintained in privately-held meetings with sound masking installed on temporary partitions. USGIF contracted with Plano,Texas-based Speech Privacy Systems, an innovator in the sound masking industry with a history of providing high levels of confidentiality to the military and to government agencies, as well as Fortune 500 businesses. “The VoiceArrest system did just what we needed it to do,” said Ley. “We tested it ourselves after it was installed, and their system truly did offer the flexibility and confidentiality our vendors required. We didn’t get a single complaint about a lack of privacy from any of our attendees. We’re very happy with the results.”
The Results
- Consistent, 24-hr speech privacy coverage which achieved confidential privacy levels.
- Competing vendors felt confident in holding sensitive meetings.
- USGIF was able to secure innovative, effective sound masking technology at reasonable cost, which was consistently and uniformly effective, and had little noticeable presence.
